The Playboy Mansion is in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles, California and is the home of Hugh Hefner. The mansion became famous during the 1970s through media reports of Hefner's lavish parties. The house is 21,987 sq ft and sits on 5.3 acres. It was built by architect Arthur R. Kelly in 1927 and acquired by Playboy from Louis D. Statham in 1971 for $1.1 million. It sits close to the northwestern corner of the Los Angeles Country Club, near UCLA and the Bel-Air Country Club. Fifteen million dollars has been invested in renovation and expansion; the market value is approximately $50 million. The mansion has 29 rooms including a wine cellar, a game room, a zoo and aviary (and related pet cemetery), tennis courts, a waterfall and a swimming pool area that includes a patio and barbecue area, a grotto, a sauna and a bathhouse.

The game room (game house) is a separate building on the property's north side. It has a backyard with lounge chairs, and gates on either side. From the fountain in front of the main entrance, there are two sidewalks, running past a wishing-well. The sidewalk on the right leads to the game house and runs past a Hollywood Star of Hefner. Its front entrance opens to a game room with a pool table in the center. This room has vintage and modern arcade games, pinball machines, player piano, jukebox, television, stereo, and couch.

A secret room known as the "Elvis Suite" is kept out of the public view. Hefner confirmed that whenever movie stars, sports stars, or rappers come there, they always request the "Elvis Suite", but that it remains, and will most likely remain, off limits. In 2002, Hefner purchased a house across the street from the mansion for use by Playmates.

Hugh Marston Hefner was born in Chicago on April 9, 1926 and is the chief creative officer of Playboy Enterprises. Hefner graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1949 with a B.A. in psychology. In 1953, Hefner raised $8,000 to launch Playboy. The first issue, published in December 1953, featured Marilyn Monroe from her 1949 nude calendar shoot. Hefner, who never met Monroe, owns the crypt next to hers.

Hefner married Mildred Williams in 1949. They had two children, Christie (born November 8, 1952) and David (born August 30, 1955). After several indiscretions they divorced in 1959. Hefner suffered a minor stroke in 1985 at age 59. After re-evaluating his lifestyle, he made several changes. The wild, all-night parties were toned down significantly and in 1988, daughter Christie began to run the Playboy empire. The following year, he married Playmate of the Year Kimberley Conrad. The couple had two sons, Marston Glenn (born April 9, 1990) and Cooper Bradford (born September 4, 1991). Hefner and Conrad separated in 1998 and divorced in 2009. Hefner then began dating several girls at once; among them, Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkinson. In October 2008, all three girls made the choice to leave the mansion. Hefner was quick to rebound and soon began dating his new "Number One" girlfriend, Crystal Harris, along with 20-year-old identical twin models Kristina and Karissa Shannon. The relationship with the twins ended in January 2010.
